The NLT Study Bible is based on the New Living Translation Bible text. First published in 1996, the New Living Translation utilizes the most recent scholarship in translation to create a text that has the same impact in the lives of modern readers that the ancient text did for the original readers. This is accomplished by translating entire thoughts (rather than individual words) into natural, everyday English. In addition, the translators have sought to translate terms shrouded in history and culture in ways that can be immediately understood by the contemporary reader.

The NLT Study Bible for BibleReader 4 platforms (iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Symbian 60-5) uses the 2007 NLT Bible translation. The NLT Study Bible for BibleReader 3 platforms (Palm and Windows Mobile) uses the 2004 NLT Bible translation.
