Description

Preaching the Cross is an inspiring book containing the reflections of experienced pastors, and dedicated to "the next generation of preachers of the cross." Collected and introduced by Mark Dever, each chapter of this book addresses a different issue in the lives and ministries of contemporary pastors.

Mark Dever uses I Corinthians 4 to reflect on the true calling of a pastor, and admonishes pastors to follow the specific examples laid out by the Apostle Paul in this portion of scripture, in "A Real Minister: I Corinthians 4."

In "Preaching Christ from the Old Testament," J. Ligon Duncan III reminds pastors to preach faithfully from the entire word of God, and not to forget the Old Testament! His call to regard the entire Bible as God-breathed scripture wisely helps preachers avoid falling prey to the trap of creating a canon-within-a-canon that consists only of the New Testament.

By examining contemporary culture and the influence it has on believers hearing the Gospel, R. Albert Mohler Jr. calls pastors to an increased sensitivity to the cultural dynamics in which preaching the Gospel takes place in "Preaching With the Culture in View," ensuring that the timeless truth of the Gospel message will be communicated effectively.

In "The Center of Christian Preaching: Justification by Faith," R.C. Sproul exhorts preachers to remember the importance of justification by faith, and reminds them not to allow a biblical understanding of justification to be diluted or eclipsed by other theological issues.

In "Preaching as Expository Exultation for the Glory of God," John Piper outlines a method of preaching called "expository exultation," which allows all sermons to be shaped by the glory of God and by the knowledge that God is present as a listener to every sermon a pastor preaches.

C. J. Mahaney calls pastors to remember their own lives and spiritual health in "The Pastor's Priorities: Watch Your Life and Doctrine." He issues a refreshing call to accountability on the part of pastors, and offers practical suggestions for how to achieve it.

In reflecting on his forty years of experience in Gospel ministry, John MacArthur offers a detailed explanation of "Why I Still Preach the Bible after Forty Years of Ministry"—an encouragement to any pastor who has spent years in the pulpit.

The seven chapters of this eBook are based on seven keynote addresses given by renowned evangelical pastors at the 2006 Together for the Gospel conference, where several thousand pastors gathered to encourage and inspire one another, and to renew their commitment to preaching a cross-centered gospel. This eBook title will be a welcome addition to the library of all pastors who desire to faithfully preach the cross.
